Richard Avedon
American photographer Richard Avedon was best known for his work in the fashion world and for his minimalist portraits. Richard Avedon was born on May 15, 1923 in New York City. His mother, Anna Avedon, came from a family of dress manufacturers, and his father, Jacob Israel Avedon, owned a clothing store called Avedon's Fifth Avenue. Inspired by his parents' clothing businesses, as a boy Avedon took a great interest in fashion, especially enjoying photographing the clothes in his father's store. At the age of 12, he joined the YMHA (Young Men's Hebrew Association) Camera Club.
Most of Richard Avedon's photos are black and white.
I like this image because I like the way the man is kind of projected forward by the way he is in focus and the background is blurred. There are leading lines in this picture drawing you further into the background by the path. There are also lines leading downwards from the tress, and there is some sort of symmetry.
Martin Schoeller
Celebrated photographer Martin Schoeller's distinct method for creating his striking large-scale portraits involves getting up close and personal with his subjects. Characterized by his models' unflinching, direct gazes, which meet the eyes of the viewer and then hold them for eternity, his Close Up photographs, often presented in larger than life sizes, offer raw and revealing glimpses into his subjects, exposing them in a way that feels almost unforgivingly truthful.
Born in Germany, the artist has lived in New York for many years and has worked as a contract photographer for the New Yorker, allowing him access to many of his subjects. His rigorous and systematic approach to image making echoes the grand tradition of German typographies pioneered by Bernd and Hilla Becher, and he often exhibits his photographs in neat, orderly grids that belie the human content they contain. Schoeller's photographs are minutely observed studies of the human face—its features, wrinkles, gestures, and expressive capacities—his images share a history with those created by Chuck Close, the contemporary art world’s master of photorealist portraiture. |
Her eyes pop out in this picture, there are similar shades in her eyes, face and hair which blend together well. There is a leading line from her noise down towards her chin. The main part of her face is in focus, while there is a soft blur around the edges and into the background.

This picture has a lo going on. I like the way that the tress frame the image and the glow of light in the center, focusing on the person standing under the bridge. This picture has a dream like feel. with areas highlighted in light and shadows around the edges. the main colours are greens, browns and blacks.

There is a lot of texture in each colour shade area even though it is a black and white image. The light falls onto this face from the top right corner which highlights some areas of his face and his hair. This makes it stand out from the darker background. There are a lot of areas of shadow.
